Police say more drivers speeding,
drink-driving.
Posted Tue Oct 2, 2007 8:00am AEST. ABC
Police say there has been a jump in the number of
drivers caught speeding and drink-driving in the
Tamworth district, in north-west New South Wales, over
the long weekend.
One driver was stopped in Kathleen Street at almost four
times the legal limit, 93 motorists were caught
speeding, 10 were found to have been drunk at the wheel.
One man is being treated in the John Hunter Hospital in
Newcastle after receiving serious facial injuries when
he crashed into a road sign while driving a motorised
scooter on the Kingswood Estate.
The highway patrol's Senior Constable Matthew Reeves
says three novice drivers were picked up for speeding,
including two 22-year-old P-platers who were picked up
at 145 kilometres per hour and 130kph.
"We detected a 22-year-old male on the New England
Highway in the Gworie area at 160kph in a 100 area. When
he was stopped he was found to be an unaccompanied
learner who'd held the licence for two months and
restricted to 80 kilometres an hour himself," he said.
1,600 drivers caught speeding in one
day
Posted Mon Dec 31, 2007 1:04pm AEDT. ABC
More than 1,600 drivers were caught speeding in
Queensland yesterday, with police warning that motorists
are still ignoring warnings against speed and alcohol
over the holiday season.
There have been four deaths on Queensland roads over the
Christmas holidays, about half the number for the same
time last year.
But more than 1,600 drivers were caught speeding
yesterday, with one driver clocked at 161 kilometres per
hour in a 100kph zone on the Bruce Highway at Redcliffe.
In another incident a P-plate driver was recorded
travelling at 141kph in a 100kph zone.
Senior sergeant Julie Elliott says 73 people were also
caught drink-driving.
"Police are continually concerned that people are
driving while effected by alcohol," she said.
Police promise long weekend roads
crackdown
Posted Wed May 30, 2007 8:08am AEST. ABC.
Police have launched Operation Rapier Two, a two-pronged
attack to curb drink-driving and serious road accidents
across the north coast region over the Queen's Birthday
long weekend.
It follows the success of Operation Rapier One, launched
earlier this year on the Sunshine Coast, and includes a
traffic education and enforcement program targeting
driver attitudes and drink-driving offences.
Inspector Peter Flanders says there have been 30 people
killed in road accidents in the north coast region so
far this year and more than half of those died in
single-vehicle accidents.
"Queen's Birthday long weekend has a state-wide
operation. In concert with that regionally, we're
running Operation Rapier Two - basically a duplication
of a very successful operation that was on the Sunshine
Coast some months ago," he said.
"We're actually expanding it to each district in our
region, so we'll be concentrating very heavily on
drink-driving from Caboolture right through to Bundaberg
and out to Kingaroy."
Inspector Tony Lewis says drink-drivers will be caught.
"We'll be out there looking for drink-driving offences
and any offences that can be attributed to bad attitude
or behaviour," he said.
"Last weekend, unfortunately, we detected and commenced
prosecutions against 31 people drink-driving between
Friday night and Monday morning. We certainly don't want
that trend to continue."
